On the northern border is Stratford-upon-Avon, famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. This medieval market town is bursting with character, the streets lined with timber-framed houses and filled with historical tales of ‘The Bard of Avon’ and his family. Sitting on the banks of the river Avon, the town is also home to the Royal Shakespeare Company – one of the country’s most well-known theatres.
